Project Title: Draft Standard for Use of Inclusive Language in Technical Terminology and Communications
Scope:
This standard provides requirements for technical terminology and communications using the English language that are inclusive and inoffensive. These requirements apply to technical information in standards, policies, plans, procedures, reports, specifications; machine-readable languages, and text presented electronically.
In December 2020, the IEEE Standards Association Standards Board approved a resolution to avoid non-inclusive and potentially offensive language in IEEE standards. IEEE Standard P3400 is being developed to provide requirements for using inclusive language in all forms of technical material. This webinar considers how terminology emerges for new technology, why some technical language is being identified as non-inclusive, and ways in which people resist change in language. We’ll consider some of the principles behind inclusive language, processes involved in reaching consensus and systematically changing to inclusive language, and practicalities of selecting inclusive terms.
